Meals? Very good meals if it's obviously to our advantage that I can speak enough Thai to make myself understandable. We can recommend a local beer "Beer Lao" tastes great. The weather is something special. We had agreed to good protective motorcycle clothing including (of course) a helmet, gloves and motorcycle boots. The North of Laos is along the border with China in February in the early morning still quite cold. But later in the day, and certainly Luang Prabang and Vang Vien, the temperature rise to about 30 degrees and then you can ride better than standing still. The second part of the motor tour took us to Thailand. So, via Vientiane and the Friendship Bridge back to Thailand, Nong Kai. You cannot avoid it to compare Laos & Thailand. The hotels in Laos in terms of price quality are very expensive. Especially in tourist places like Luang Prabang and Vang Vien. Assuming that compare with Thailand or is there a big difference but in favor of Thailand. The infrastructure of Thailand is much better than in Laos where the roads are sometimes completely gone. A must for lovers of motor cycles is the part near Lomsak and Phetchabun. I think specially made for motorcycle riders. Superlatives and words fall short. I cannot escape the cats to some policeman of Luang Prabang. Our papers were 100% in order but without any reason we had to go to the side of the road and later to the little police desk. The police man did not speak one word of another language and they could not ...

"Vang Vieng, Laos" Paulandnic's photos about Vang Vieng, Lao Peoples Dem Rep
A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Vang Vieng, Lao Peoples Dem Rep by TravelPod blogger Paulandnic titled "Vang Vieng, Laos" Paulandnic's travel blog entry: "We left early doors to get to the southern bus staion to catch the early morning public bus (was full of backpackers) to Van Vieng. On the way we met a nice local lad who gave us loads of boiled sweetcorn for our journey! We wound around the mountains with once again gorgeous views as far as we could see. 6 hours later we landed in Vang Vieng, a strange little town, with nothing of real significance and loads of restaurnats, travel agencies and bars showing Friends on repeat...brilliant! That night met up with Michael, Rachel, Dan & Hayley that night for a meal and some beers. Most people stop in Vang Vieng to go tubing (floating down the river in a tube stopping at lots of bars and rope-swinging into the water), but we decided against it and went for a walk instead. In the mid-day heat we set off in search of Tham Phu Kham cave with a Buddha statue inside it. After an hour and a half we found it and we were knackered and really hot. Nic fell over (again) on her way into the cave following our young tour guide who was jumping bare foot everywhere while we tenatively followed him with the torches he lent us. Inside was a huge gold buddha statue with tunnels going off everywhere, but we couldn't go down them. Once we got back we showered and decided to go drinking before meeting up with Michael ...

Chanthaburi - จันทบุรี - Jao Lao - หาดเจ้าหลาว - Thailand
Chanhtaburi จันทบุรี is so often over looked when folks are planning their holidays in Thailand, but we think it is one of the most charming provinces to visit. Unlike Pattya to the northeast and Ko Chang to the southwest, Jao Lao Beach หาดเจ้าหลาว in Chanthaburi rarely sees any foreign visitors. You are much more likely to bump into Thai tourists than any out-of-country travelers. This is, of course, both good and bad: good, in that you can easily skip out on the normal cheesiness surrounding the touristy backpacker scene; however, bad, in that if you cannot speak Thai, you may struggle to really find a place to relax here. This video was taken during a survey of the smaller resorts and guesthouses lining Jao Lao Beach. This is the view from Yajai Beach Resort ยาใจ บีช รีสอร์ท. Prices here run from 1200฿ to 5000฿ depending on the season. Their website is here: www.yajaibeachresort.net --These videos are all part of the new guidebook we are putting together here at Other Places Publishing for Thailand. If these pique your interest make sure to get a copy of the book in Dec 2010. Till then check out the website at www.otherplacespublishing.com or for more pics on Thailand check out this link picasaweb.google.com Cheers!--

"Sala Hin Boun" Wagscallion's photos about Kong Lor, Lao Peoples Dem Rep
A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Kong Lor, Lao Peoples Dem Rep by TravelPod blogger Wagscallion titled "Sala Hin Boun" Wagscallion's travel blog entry: "We left Vientiane at 5am to catch the 6am bus from the out of town bus station and were glad when the bus finally moved off at 7am! The friendly locals helped to point us in the right direction as we headed for a backwater town called Na Hin. This place was amazing - cows, pigs, goats, chickens, dogs and children were all wandering freely round the market area as we sat eating noodle soup waiting for our songthaew (pick up truck) to Sala Hinboun. After 4 hours baking in the sun waiting for the truck that was going to go 'soon' we spent 2 hours getting to our destination on a very dusty, bumpy road. We were given the non-dusty cab seats (at no extra cost), while the old lady, pregnant lady, monk plus other locals sat (bounced) crammed in the back under inches of dusty mud - we have no shame. So 13 hours after leaving our guesthouse in Vientane, we arrived at Sala Hinboun Guesthouse which is a collection of 'chalets' by the Hin Boun river in beautiful, private grounds. We chose a riverside room of course for the princely sum of 23 dollars (expensive, but well deserved) The reason for this outing was to visit the Kong Lor cave, a massive cave formed by the river Hin Boun burrowing its way through limestone - the river flows gently for 7.5 Km before emerging the other side of the mountain. We got a boat ...

Travel Video - Airlie Beach, Irish Backpacker, Australia
Travel Videos and dvd's at www.overlander.tv Airlie Beach (pop. 3029) Airlie Beach, gateway to the Whitsunday islands has a reputation for being a great place to party, in between sailing trips to the islands. Another must stop location on the backpacker migration up north. Had a ball in Airlie, went out on a boat yesterday to snorkel the reef. The colours of the coral and the diversity of the fish life just blew me away. Thanks to Jetstream for the trip. Also checked out the Barefoot Bushmans Wildlife Park where you can see a variety of Aussie wildlife including a great crocodile show. Tomorrow I go out on a 54 foot Classic Schooner, the Atlanta , for a morning cruise before heading off to Magnetic Island. It's a hard life..... In Airlie I decided that given it is such a big location for back packers, instead of interviewing an Aussie local, I would interview a back packer working at Airlie. A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Luang Prabang, Lao Peoples Dem Rep by TravelPod blogger Lisastravel titled "Laos land of Monks,Wats,Slow Boats, great food !" Lisastravel's travel blog entry: "After a 2 day boat journey down the mighty Mekong River I arrived at Luang Prabang the 'Kingdom of a Million Elephants' which is an UNESCO World Hertitage Site. It dosen't seem to have changed much and has a mix of colonial french and traditional Lao artitechture. The resturants are a mix of French/Laos cusine which is delicious with French bakeries serving fresh hot baguettes. Luang Prabang is a lazy place spending most days hanging out in cafes which are surrounded by many Wats and hundreds of Monks! The highlights for me were climbing the many steps to the top of Mount Phousi and taking in the views; I was accompnaied by two small Laos girls who helped me release a bird as an offering to Budda. Early morning rise to see the monks recieving Alms and visiting the markets which had some beautiful handicrafts if only I had a bigger bag! Close to my questhouse was the Royal Palace which was home to the monarchy till it was abolished in 1975. Interesting fact from 1964 - 1972, US bombers dropped more than two billion kilograms of bombs in Loas, making it the most heaverly bombed country in the world. When I visted the Royal Palace on display were gifts from different countries, including the Laos flag which America brought to space and encased in a glass box with ...

"Crossing the Mekong into Laos" Annek's photos about Huay Xai, Lao Peoples Dem Rep
A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Huay Xai, Lao Peoples Dem Rep by TravelPod blogger Annek titled "Crossing the Mekong into Laos" Annek's travel blog entry: "After my night of luxury in the Rim Pai Cottages, I set off for the first leg of my journey into Northern Laos. I took a good value package deal having worked out that it wouldn't cost much more than independent travel, hoping that it would help make the long journey run as smoothly as possible. The first minivan journey was back to Chiang Mai. From there we were driven in a second minivan, with broken air-con and a driver who I think may have been clinically insane, to Chiang Kong, a small town on the Thai side of the Thai-Lao border. We arrived there in the early evening and were provided with dinner and fairly decent guesthouse accomomdation as part of the package. The next morning we set off to cross the Mekong River from Thailand into Laos. This was my first view of the Mekong and I found that particularly exciting as I will be virtually following the river all the way down through Laos and Cambodia to its delta in Vietnam. The ferry ride across the river was quick and painless, but the immigration checkpoint on the Lao side was absolute chaos - if I ever decide upon a career in international smuggling, I think this place may well be the key to my success. At this point I was adopted into my next group of backpacker friends - Mel, Simon and Katie. Mel and Simon are a couple, living in ...

"Pakse and the Bolevan Pleateau" Mcmactravels's photos about Pakse, Lao Peoples Dem Rep
A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Pakse, Lao Peoples Dem Rep by TravelPod blogger Mcmactravels titled "Pakse and the Bolevan Pleateau" Mcmactravels's travel blog entry: "Um, well, lets see...I am writing this one month and two countries later so it might be brief. Pakse was the jumping off spot for our motorbike trip on the Bolevan Pleateau. The town of Pakse, well, there was not a whole lot going on there for us—some good Indian food, a nice market, and the usual daily life of the locals. We rented a motorbike and packed a small overnight bag. Then, with the wind blowing over our helmets, we took off into the late morning sun. It was a lovely ride up and up onto the plateau into a new biome and cooler temperatures. We passed some small villages with specialty cottage industries—a palm leaf roof making village, a textiles village, and many coffee-growing plantations. The French, in their colonizing days began (?) the coffee growing industry here, and it has been reviving lately. With Kevin behind the helm and me sightseeing on the back, we made it the 87km to Tadlo. Tadlo is a very small town with just a couple of guesthouses and resorts, and not much else—not even the usual shops and markets. But, it has impressive waterfalls; three of them in fact, but we only saw the first two. For those of you who have seen Triple Falls in Dupont Forest, they looked like the lower two, but bigger! More water, more rock, and there were some sweet little bungalows ...

Louang Phrabang Pak Ou Cave Laos (Sept 2009) allotment 1
1 USD = 18000 VND (Vietnam Dong) 1 USD = 8500 LAK (Laos Kip) 1 USD = 3.5 RM (Ringgit Malaysia) 1 USD = 6.5 MMK (Myanmar Kyat) 1 USD = 4250 KHR (Cambodia Riel) Luang Phrabang is a city in Laos; it was formerly the capital of a kingdom of the same name and is also the name of a province of which it is the capital. The city of Luang Phrabang is in north central Laos, on the Mekong River about 425 km north of Vientiane. It has a population of about 16000 people. Until the communist takeover in 1975, it was the "royal capital," the seat of the king of Laos. Today it is a UNESCO World heritage site. Pak Ou Caves — The famous "Buddha caves" are north of town on the Mekong and can be reached by road (approx 1 hr) or river boat. Alternatively, you can hire canoes and a guide for the day, which would allow you to view the beautiful scenery and visit the caves without throngs of other tourists. It's also possible to finish the trip at the 'whisky village' where the local Laolao (lao rice spirit) is made. There are two caves - one on the entry level and another - the upper caves - on top of the hill. A very steep climb, but worth the efforts. A torch recommended to see the upper cave, as it is dark.

A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Luang Prabang, Lao Peoples Dem Rep by TravelPod blogger Yamahuh titled "Jewel of the Mekong - Luang Prabang" Yamahuh's travel blog entry: "'Jewel of the Mekong'; Luang Prabang, Laos: December 23rd - 27th 2007 Our first impressions of Luang Prabang are mixed. It is full of western travelers, guesthouses, hotels and restaurants and appears a bit 'glitzy' but at the same time it is also stunningly pretty. Small, tidy backyards with blossoming flowers, neat gardens, winding alleys, beautiful temples and French colonial architecture are all wrapped up into one intoxicating package. However, now is not the time for sight seeing; after our long and moderately uncomfortable trip down the Mekong we are relishing the idea of a hot shower and comfy bed, so we grab our backpacks and begin to search for the hotel we had booked. In a back and forth flurry of e-mail correspondence, we had arranged for the Senesouk Guesthouse to reserve two rooms for us and the entire first week of the trip had been geared towards getting here in time to avail ourselves of those reservations. For some strange reason there was no address included in any of the e-mails and so after a couple of directionally impaired false starts and a determined slog through town we finally find it nestled between a local restaurant and another guesthouse on the main street; Sakkaline road. Unfortunately the balcony room that we had reserved and confirmed is not ...
